  • What is Ichthyology?

In this article I plan on discussing exactly what Ichthyology (pronounced ich·thy·ol·o·gy) is and its history. Ichthyology is a sub field of zoology that focuses on the study of fish. Ichthyology is a field that is rapidly and constantly making new discoveries, with around 250 new species discovered every year. While other fields of zoology have hit a wall on the discovery of new species, Ichthyology continues to discover a vast amount of new ones due to the size and depth of the various bodies of water.

The amount of discovered fish species already outnumbers the total of all other animal species on the planet.  There are currently over 31,500 different fish species that have been discovered. While Ichthyology may not have the same amount of recognition as other fields such as palaeontology its popularity is steadily growing.

Ichthyology has been around since the Upper Palaeolithic Revolution, The field originally emerged from man’s urge to feed, clothe and equip themselves. It has been reported that the earliest Ichthyologists (pronounced ich'thy·ol'o·gist)  were actually hunters who had learned how to use and obtain the useful fish. They also learnt were to obtain a good amount of these useful fish including what time they were most readily available.

I hope this brief overview of  Ichthyology has sparked your interest in it and that you can now see how interesting the subject can be and that even though the practice is has been going for hundreds of years that there are still many secrets hidden within the bodies of water we see every day. you could also check out Sea World Discount Tickets
